Good News
By Liz, Friday, January 30, 2009, 1 commentsMy friend summed it up best in her email to me today. She wrote, "Some good news for a change!" and she attached a news report about President Obama signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. The Fair Pay Act lifts the time restraints placed on people filing complaints of wage discrimination. As of the signing, people can file complaints within 180 days of their most recent paycheck, not their first paycheck.
It's good news because the first bill the new president signed supports equal rights.
It's good news because he framed the issue as " upholding one of this nation's founding principles: that we are all created equal, and each deserve a chance to pursue our own version of happiness."
It's good news because President Obama stated in his remarks today that equal pay is not just a women's issue; it is a family issue.
It's good news because he acknowledged that gender discrimination is not just bad for women, it’s bad for business.
It's good news because the President also reminded us that the work isn’t done as of this bill signing. Women still earn, on average, just 78 cents for every dollar a man earns. But the bill is an important step forward in achieving wage parity.
It's good news and we need to celebrate good news when we hear it.
