The Facebook Waste

“I’m a single mom now. I find out I’m pregnant again and the prick cheats on me and gives me an STD. FML.”

No, this isn’t a line from a drama crazed episode of “90210”. This is an actual status that recently graced my news feed. I wish I was making this up, but this is how bad things have become in the realm that is Facebook.

Lets face it, for the most part, social networking sites are completely pointless. They’ve merely become a tool for 16 year old girls to flaunt pictures of themselves giving the peace sign or for people to bitch about whatevers irritating them at any given moment. There's seemingly no sense of privacy anymore, and I constantly see my “friends” updating their statuses every 5 minutes, as if the world needs to be constantly alerted that their taking a shower, getting coffee or doing homework. Are these monumental events? Why do they merit any attention what so ever? It blows my mind that people actually spend their time clicking the thumbs up button for these stupid statuses, or commenting on such insignificant things. What REALLY drives me insane, is this absolutely ridiculous notion of “FarmVille” or “Cyber Café”. Do people honestly not have anything better to do then to sit at a computer and raise virtual cows and concot electronic pies? How about you tear yourself away from Facebook and go visit an ACTUAL farm or bake an ACTUAL pie?

I just can't fathom why this has become such a phenomenon. Perhaps we're just completely self absorbed and think that everything we do is of importance to everyone else. Maybe we just want attention and try to obtain it by posting hundreds of pictures of ourselves and wait for the gratification that Facebook brings when people post a compliment. Or could it be that we're just wasteful. We waste our time creeping on people's pages, many of whom we don’t even know. Instead of doing things of value, like reading or god forbid, paying attention in class, we get lost in pointless crap that’s posted on the site. People somehow aquire thousands of internet friends, but they lose a sense of human connection in the real world. Communication is done through the veil of the computer, not by physically talking to people face to face or even on the phone.

I am not completely innocent. I’ll update my status every so often if something major has occurred and I want my friends to know about it. I use it to keep in touch with friends I don’t see and family that lives far away, and I think it’s a great in that sense. I just refuse to let it run my life.

I can only imagine what society could have accomplished by now if the distraction of Facebook didn’t exist.

I think a big part of fbook

I think a big part of fbook is connecting with people from the past or being able to talk to people you don't really get to talk to much. But I know a LOT of people who update their statuses every minute it feels like, and it's annoying. Check out http://failbooking.com/ ; they have really interesting facebook statuses. most are hilarious.

Agreed! As a matter of fact,

Agreed! As a matter of fact, I have deleted my facebook account several times for this reason. I maybe check it once a day to keep up with my family since we are scattered all over the place (especially my sister who's expecting in May) and I do love it for that reason. Other than that, I think I have hid about 90% of people from my news feed and hid 100% of the additional application updates as well.

I actually just heard about

I actually just heard about failbooking, i feel as though most of my "friends" should be on it. i just dont get why people feel the need to expose everyone to such personal information. the std thing really blew my mind!

I agree with this in that I

I agree with this in that I CAN NOT believe some of the stuff people post. Like their dad is dying, their mom just passed away, they are having utero surgery, etc. Who wants to know all that stuff. Maybe your 15 closest friends, but 834 people that you kinda know? I don't know. Anyway, I am A-ddicted. Can't help myself. But I use it for work, to help promote causes and still keep up with friends. I'm with you on this about half way.

FB user

I use FB and like it. While I do find some info to be TMI, it has been a great way to reconnect with friends I had lost - whether it was an old co-worker or a high school friend. I do think that way too many people spend time on the internet while they could be out doing things in life. It is a fact however that it is the information age of technology and we are in it. Those who do not like FB, should just delete their accounts and live without it. I certainly watch what I say or try to as I do not want co-workers knowing all my business.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I hope you can move on and be happy as a single parent. Unfortunately, there are many men (and women) who are losers and do not respect others. We have to respect ourselves and keep our eyes open.

Best to you.

i hear you

of course we all get sucked into it, i get caught up in it sometimes too, i would just never post such things like you suggested skirt steph...its hard not to hear things like oh did you see what so and so said on facebook and not want to check it out for yourself. its great for promotion and what not, i just think people go WAY overboard.

and to clarify, i am not a single mom w a cheating boyfriend and an STD...that was an example of my "friends" status ;)
