High (ugh) School Reunion
By Laura Henneforth, Saturday, February 27, 2010, 1 commentsSo here it is. A high school reunion.
I don’t know if it’s a common type of massive playdate. This particular event includes not only my graduating class of ’89 but ALL the classes ever assembled at my old high school. And I don’t know if it’s the phenomena of Face Book that has gathered us to together; the nicest thing about social networking is, well, networking. So off I go to the arena, a gargantuan bar and grill aptly named The Boat where most of us at one point have sat at plank table scarfing down burgers bigger than our heads and watched our Little League Dads and Soccer Moms get drunk ( not mine though, I was in drama and yearbook. Geeky stuff like that).
Don’t get me wrong. I have a few friends from high school that I love and want to see. Who I want my boyfriend to meet. Who I’d much rather sit and chat with in person rather than behind the veil of Face book.
I don’t know if it is the phenomenon of Face Book either that has me preparing to camp out with people that I didn’t like in high school. Truth be known, I really hated some of them and they are hitting that ATTENDING button. I took myself very seriously in high school, setting the stage for some vulnerable moments orchestrated by a few wily kids who have morphed into adults that probably have kids that behave as cruelly as they did.
I can find out tonight. I will see what those lithe cheerleaders became when I was nothing but an uncoordinated freshman. Or the goth girls in the locker room who fell into an austere hush whenever I came in only to burst into gaggles of laughter as soon as I passed their row. Or the jocks in the corner of the economics class where their football coach ran the show and conveniently ignored the lovely nickname they christened me with.
20 years later, the memories curdle my gut. And I am ready to break bread with them tonight.
Yeah, it’s gonna be great. More is always revealed ….

High School is horrible for
High School is horrible for almost everyone. I think the only reason reunions came into being is so that you get to see how the "popular" kids fared in real life. Be happy you didn't hit your peak in high school only to lament about the good ol days all the rest of your life!
