More about Me:
As a blogger for skirt! I’m excited to share narratives, commentaries, interviews, and occasional reviews that explore the message of Leonard Cohen’s "Anthem.” It’s one of those songs that can make you cry and hope in equal measure. Practically growling, Cohen exhorts us to, "Ring the bells that still can ring; forget your perfect offering; there is a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in." What a sharp understanding of what it means to be human and alive! I am fascinated by people who thrive in the face of their human limitations, whether these are exposed to them through chosen experiences (like extreme sports) or involuntary ones (like illness and disability). I can never get enough of stories about how and what the light gets through--and about the precious qualities of that light.
Working as a mother, freelance writer, and documentary filmmaker, my work has appeared or is forthcoming in Word Riot, Identity Theory, decomp magazine, The Chaffey Review, Camroc Press Review, Yellow Mama, The LA Times, Poets and Writers, The Washington City Paper and Bitch, among others. I have written radio stories for This American Life and Studio 360 and my film "Wedding Advice: Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace" is distributed by Berkeley Media. Currently, I'm writing a book of narrative nonfiction, When Birdboy Calls, about the psycho-spiritual connection between brain cancer patient David Welch and artist Rosemary Covey.
Favorite Music: The White Stripes, Tom Waites, Macy Gray, Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, Jason Castro...
Favorite Books and Writers: The Tricky Part, Prep, Random Family, Stranger Than Fiction, Member of the Wedding, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Fight Club, Beloved, My Sister's Bones, Housekeeping...
I am most proud of: projects I've brought to completion--a film "Wedding Advice: Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace," various essays and radio shows. I'm proud of my kids too, my fierce daughter and my charismatic son.
I am most guilty of: self doubt and related procrastination.
The world would be a better place, if only: We all practiced inclusion politically, emotionally, socially.
Words I live by: (Try to) Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They came through you but not from you and though they are with you yet they belong not to you.--Kahlil Gibran
