seeing the world through rosé colored glasses

Please note that my glasses are rosé colored, not rose.

This isn’t a post about how optimistic and la-di-da I am.  It’s a post about how I spend most days squinting and as disoriented as a drunk.

Here’s my issue… I’m nearsighted and I can’t seem to find one solution that will let me see in every situation.

I’ve been managing my sight issues by rotating the use of prescription glasses, contacts, and magnifying readers, but yesterday I realized I need to see clearly at all times.   Here’s what happened…

It was about 5:30pm, and a cloudy day, I was returning home from running errands and as I was approaching my house I saw one of the stray cats I feed dead on the side of the road.

I don’t know about you, but when I have a sudden jolt like that I get this awful fireball feeling.  You know that burning rush in the center of your chest that bursts outward in a nanosecond and sends sweat tingles to every pore.

Looking back on the event, I don’t know why I kept looking at his body, but as I got right up to it the fireball evaporated when my eyes realized that this is what I was seeing:

Seriously.  A stick.  I thought a stick was a dead tabby cat*.  This tabby cat to be exact:

Photo taken later the same day as proof that he is indeed alive; and not a rotting stick.

So, here’s my dilemma, I have numerous optholomagical** aids, but none of them work in every situation.

CONTACTS
While my contacts work well for driving, watching television, and seeing at a distance, they work for shit for reading—and in fact blur my up-close vision so much that I have to wear….

MAGNIFYING READERS
Yes, those granny glasses that sit on the end of your nose.  If I’m wearing my contacts I also need to have these on to read.  And since I’m a writer, reading is kind of essential.

RX GLASSES
The “cat vs stick incident” recounted above happened while I was wearing my glasses.  The prescription is old and I think that’s part of the reason these are ineffective.  I don’t see very clear at a distance and I have to take them off to read.  (So basically, they’re pretty useless.)

EYEBALLS
My eyeballs are still doing okay for working on the computer and reading, but anything more than 3 feet in the distance is a mystery.

So, I’m now realizing that I really need to be able to see—at all distances—without having to change from contacts to glasses to my other pair of glasses to my bare eyeballs.

Has anyone been through this same challenge?  Do you have advice?  Lasik?  Bifocals? Binoculars?

I would have the same

I would have the same problems but...at my last eye appointment, the doc realized that he could reduce the power on my contacts and make it possible for me to read without the granny glasses. It seems my distance vision is getting better as the close-up vision gets worse--so my too-strong lenses were making it even harder to read up close. Might be worth a try for you!

For those of you who aren't

For those of you who aren't wine lovers (are there any out there?) and who don't get the (lame) joke of the blog title, rosé is a type of wine (like Merlot or Pinot Grigio).

Now isn't this blog post so much better since I explained that?!

Jenny -- great info, thanks!

Jenny -- great info, thanks!  The last time I went to the eye doctor he tried the "bifocal contacts" -- total failure.  Uncomfortable, plus I couldn't see anything.  I'll ask about downgrading my distance prescription.  Thanks so much for the tip!

Rose'

I heart rose' (can't seem to put the empha-sis on the right syll-a-ble) in the summertime -- never ever to be confused with white zinfandel.  Perhaps opthamological aids would be the correct non-made up word - albeit not as fun.

I'm farsighted and have the same problems. I've been wearing bifocals for 10 years and I'm still not use to them. I do fine reading and writing, but I can't walk or drive with the darn things on. It's frustrating!

I hope you find a solution soon!

I am also farsighted and I

I am also farsighted and I have to rotate between my rx glasses and my super strong rx reading glasses constantly to avoid very bad headaches and other issues, the thing is, I don't think I look cute in glasses so I resist them, or I lose them. I just got them in january, and my last vision test before that said I had 20/20 vision (it was 10 years ago but whatever). I can read a sign a mile away but I recently learned I should be able to read a book 12 inches from my face without squinting. Hmmm and I can't see other things with the reading glasses because I get sick, so I get stuck swapping glasses every second or being completely unsure of what I'm looking at. I can absolutely see the cat incident happening to me.
