A single step
By Jessica.M, Monday, January 4, 2010, 3 commentsIt's an old adage that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. What those guys don't tell you is that it can also start with packing up your home and driving down to West Palm where you then catch the bus to the train which will take you to the shuttle which will take you to the Miami airport, which is where I find myself waiting for my flight to Lima as the first stop on the "journey of a lifetime" (as many of my friends, coworkers and family members have referred to the trip).
Many of our friends have pressed for details "what are you doing when you get there?", "what about the house?", "what about your cats?", "do you have any goals for the year?" and are completely baffled as to how we can just "go".
It's not like we didn't think of all of these things, we just had a lot longer to think about these things and come up with the solutions and the motivation was there. For my part, I just needed to get the heck outta dodge and world travel seemed like a good excuse to pack up the ol' ball and chain and hit the trails. For the past year and a half or so, we've been working on the goal of taking this gap year, so while it may have seen new and novel to everyone we've been telling over the past six months (since I got approved for a leave of absence at work), I find myself sitting here and just feeling like it happened as a matter of course and not the dedicated efforts that both TJ and I have put into getting all of our ducks in a row. Mostly, we had to have faith that things would fall into place. As we've told them all, we've just taken everything one step at a time. Perhaps a journey of a thousand miles really does start with a single step.

unknown.
I think its that doing it takes courage and being comfortable with a certain amount of the unknown that most of us are uncomfortable with. Congrats on taking the first step!
