Sax and Gender
By jennymaxwell, Monday, October 18, 2010"An all-lady sax band? Let's party," says the invitation from Tracie Broom to see The Tiptons Sax and Drum Quartet. They're playing at 701 Center for Contemporary Art tomorrow night (Tuesday) at 8pm.
They're named in honor of Billy Tipton, a saxophonist, pianist--and a woman who lived as a man for more than 50 years, pursuing a career in the male-dominated world of jazz.
Though they have played in Columbia before to very good reviews, I didn't see them then. From this photo, looks as if they have five members--so I guess they're a sax quartet plus drums.

Doors open at 7pm. $10 non-members, $8 701 CCA members, $5 students with ID. 701 Center for Contemporary Arts is upstairs in the 701 Whaley Building.
