Starstruck? Not so much

I got stuck watching a Disney original movie last night. Starstruck? If you've watched the Disney channel at all in the last three months you've seen the ads. Every commercial break you've seen the ads. Oy! The overselling that channel does! But of course, my kids took the bait and couldn't WAIT to see it. The writing was... eh. Sterling Knight wasn't too bad as a pop star who claims to want to live a normal life. His costar, a newcomer whose name I never bothered to learn, was unnaturally hostile. I mean, I understand she doesn't like the guy's music and all-- but seriously, did her parents never teach her to be civil? It was such an obvious device to create conflict that it was painful to watch. And the contrived coincidence of the song lyrics. Please. Could they have given him a song to sing that didn't say EXACTLY what he would have said anyway? And it was so incredibly sweet that I'm surprised I don't have diabetes now. The "villians" in the movie are the paparrazzi, who are so prescient that you'd think they had the pop star GPS tagged.

Overall, the actress was unlikable and the story was unbelievable. Sterling Knight is a cute little teeny-bopper and I predict that Disney will push him into Big Things. He's got weird creases around his mouth, though, and I don't see his wholesome look catching on with anyone other than the teen crowd (a la Robert Pattinson). And if the paparrazzi are really that good at finding stars no-matter-what maybe we should send them after Bin Laden. They'd find him in less than a week... and with some bikini babe in one hand and a jack & coke in the other!
