If you’ve watched any of the winter Olympics or sports programming in the past few weeks you have seen the Old Spice guy. Have you seen this "man your man could smell like"? Sitting on a horse, talking loud, oozing confidence to the point where it’s almost offensive….
Is it just me or is this ad another in a string of quirky, random commercials that are becoming a trend? Where you remember the events or character in the commercial but 30 seconds later have no clue what product was being promoted. Much like the Dos Equis fly guy dubbed "the most interesting man in the world” Old Spice guy is brashly arrogant yet strangely charming and intriguing. This disturbs me on a number of levels. What just occurred to me while I’m writing this post is that this guy is addressing the ladies. He’s yelling and barking orders, posing and insulting you by telling you your man smells like a lady….
Yet no women wear Old Spice so are women really buying Old Spice for their men? Do men really care what their body wash smells like? I’m so confused!
“Look Back at ME!”
It’s hard to stay focused even writing about this dude as he is the king of mixed messages. He’s handsome, burly, authoritative, a bit outrageous and cocky. Ladies, admit it - as disgusting as they can be, we like these guys. He’s a fantasy (airbrushed chest hair and all). He's the guy we love to hate and hate to love. And the fact that this viral, cocky, silver-tongued man is insulting your man while he's watching the game just may motivate him to try some "manly" body wash.
Every time I see this commercial I find myself in total conflict; laughing, then turning up my nose in disgust, and nodding in approval at his antics, and then shaking my head. Clearly this is marketing genius because I'm still watching the video and wondering who came up with the concept and if it really is going to grab the attention of the ladies out there who's men are using their body wash.

I think those commercials are hilarious. And I took his bravado as so ridiculous it didn't even occur to me to be offended. But yes, I do think women are the ones who buy body wash. Which is why "our man smells like a lady." HA! It makes me LOL just thinking about it, it's so stupid. But the same thing happens in reverse with lingerie brands like Victoria's Secret. Those women writhing in sheets aren't trying to sell bras to us, but to our significant others.

Probably because that guy is super hot! (I'm easily distracted that way!) But yes, I think mostly it is really funny. (And I don't think my husband smells like a girl, but if smelling like that dude would also make my husband look like that dude, well...I might have to buy some!)
