Thank you Don Cornelius
By FranneS, Thursday, February 2, 2012Don Cornelius I can’t stop thinking about you. The news said you passed away but it wasn’t until I read the newspaper this morning that I realized you took your own life. Some may consider that a selfish act but something tells me in your case you knew something the rest of us didn’t. Did you have a terminal illness?
Soul Train was the most fun you could have dancing in front of your TV way back when. Yes we had American Bandstand and growing up in Maryland/DC I had the Milt Grant show but your show? I have to say by way of disclosure that I am not African American. I am/was just a girl that loves/loved to dance. Watching Soul Train I felt like my outrageous moves made me a part of something bigger. The Saturday AM Bandstand felt a little like a clique to me. Not being a popular girl or a particularly slim and attractive one that show just left me cold. I liked the rating new music part…can you dance to that….but that was about all.
Soul Train was hip, it was fun and it was a show! When my first child was born I danced with him in my arms. He smiled and giggled and I knew we were doing a bonding dance.
Thanks Don for helping me move with the beat and feel I belonged.
