Hey Sandra Bullock, Can We Talk?

Here’s a response to the “Is No one talking about Sandra Bullock" post by skirtSteph which frankly I also thought was a little odd--not the post, the fact that no one was blogging about Sandra or the affair here on Skirt.  As for myself I started writing this post right after the news broke--and then I, like so many others, was just so disgusted by the whole thing (enough with the cheating sex addicts already!) that I kind of let it go.  But at the end of the day I’ve always got to get in my say and give my take on the situation because that's just the kind of girl I am .  So here is mine and it has been this right from the beginning.

Sandra, here is a very helpful piece of advice (albeit a little late) from the great Maya Angelou: “The first time someone shows you who they really are, believe them.”

I don’t know Sandra Bullock, so I don’t know what was going on in her head that allowed her to ignore the oh-so-many signs that Jesse James is a a total loser. Did she think she was getting a “bad boy” who was all of a sudden going to be good?  Did she chalk up his prior marriage to the porn star as temporary insanity?  Did the fact that he was cheating on the porn star wife with her have any bearing on her decision to marry this dude?

Of course he was different with you Sandra, you’re a celebrity!  Celebrities always get treated differently than regular people!  Are you so down to earth that you’re not aware that your fame puts you into a whole different realm?  Why wouldn’t some sleaze bag motorcycle dude want to be married to a beautiful celebrity who is gorgeous and talented?  What did he have to lose by entering into that situation?  I’m sure her friends were horrified that she ended up with a sleaze bag like him. I wonder how may of them she cast aside in the process.

Don’t get me wrong, I feel terrible for Sandra Bullock right now. I’m sad for her that her biggest professional achievement will forever be tainted with this humiliation.  It’s upsetting that she can’t get to enjoy the recognition that she worked so hard for all of these years.  It almost seems like a cruel joke.  And the worst part of it is that she thanked him publicly in her acceptance speech.  I bet that’s the part that really burns.

I don’t know what it is that causes us to become deaf to that voice inside that says..."wait a minute, are you sure about this?" or what causes us to brush aside those red flags in the name of giving someone the benefit of the doubt when they really don’t deserve it.

We’ve all done it.  I know I have and let me tell you when the shit hits the fan it hurts.  But once you go down that road and you’ve been stung, it wakes you up and you think twice about shutting out your instincts the next time.  You pay a little more attention, and you step back a little so that you can see what’s really there and who the person really is before you really let them in.  This was such an emotionally expensive lesson for her; those kinds of things have deep meaning for those who have to go through them.  I hope after the dust settles that she gets it.

I LOVE that Maya Angelou

I LOVE that Maya Angelou line. I try to remember it whenever my gut tells me something or the hair on the back of my neck stands up.
