It's Rerun Time
By figmentcat, Tuesday, November 2, 2010So much that's on television these days is passed off as a "guilty pleasure." Everything's Real Housewives of Somewhere and Hoarders-R-Us and ridiculous "reality." Only once or twice have I ever found myself really getting into any of these shows, and for me, I'm left feeling more guilt than I am pleasure. I'd rather watch a tried and true rerun any day. Give me West Wing Marathon Mondays on Bravo or a TGIF-themed block of Full House and Family Matters on Nick-at-Nite.
Reruns are my TV of choice most of the time, and it perplexes the heck out of my fiance, Rob. He doesn't get the joy of three Golden Girls episodes in a row or unexpectedly flipping on Saved by the Bell at 1:00 a.m. (!!!) He prefers shows that educate you whilst blowing things up (ugh, Mythbusters, yuck). Rob just doesn't share my passion for nostalgia, which is, I guess, truly my guilty pleasure in watching reruns. I mostly watch the ones I watched growing up, and I enjoy the memories that always pop up whenever they're on.
I wonder if, years from now, any of today's reality shows will be aired as reruns. Are they too timely to be replayed in 20 years? Will my then nearly 50-year-old friends want to relive the past with Teresa and Danielle on Real Housewives of New Jersey? It's probably in the eye of the beholder. Somebody flipping through the channels at 1:00 a.m. in 2030 would surely stop to savor a few old table flips. Not me, but I get it (kind of). I just hope they keep playing my oldies somewhere. I don't think I'll ever get tired of running into Zack and Kelly on a random, restless late night.
