It's the Little Things
By figmentcat, Saturday, September 18, 2010, 1 commentsHow many hotel toiletries can one collect on a cross-country road-trip? A lot, and I'm speaking from current experience. My boyfriend, Rob, and I are in the thick of our adventure, and I've managed to accumulate a hefty collection of little soaps and shampoos and conditioners. We're doing about 50% camping/50% hotel stays, so it's not that hefty of a bunch, but it's enough for Rob to make copious jokes about. "Why don't you just leave some?" he asks, truly unable to grasp the joy of miniature toiletries. "How many do you need?" he asks. "What are you going to do with all those?!"
I'm a product kind of girl. Some girls are shoe gals. Others are jewelry chicas. You get my drift. I'm all about cosmetic products of every size, shape, color, and packaging. So, naturally, I'm going to squeal with delight upon sight of itty-bitty bottles left just for me... us, I mean. Rob doesn't believe me, but I really will use all of them, eventually. I've got a basketful at home, and I shuffle through them whenever I'm in the mood to try something new.
Imagine my excitement, then, when our recent very, very bargain hotel was stocked full of not just the standard hair and soap products, but toothpaste, body wash, lotion, facial wipes, and coupons! I about near died. Rob just shook his head and giggled to himself. It's the little things with me. Pitching the tent on a campground is fun (for a few nights), but most of the places we've camped at haven't even had soap dispensers to use in the bathrooms! (Gasp!) Rob and I definitely differ in this category. I take 45-minute baths and showers; he's out in 5 minutes. I'm lotionizing, shaving, exfoliating, and perfuming, while he's washing his face with soap and rinsing off before I've even set up the row of products to use for tonight's shower. Thankfully, we've allowed each other some liberties in this area on the trip. I'll do the camping thing for a few days, and then the bathroom is mine as soon as we check into the hotel. I'm looking forward to adding all my new little product goodies to my collection at home. They're like bonus souvenirs. And much cheaper than a shoe obsession.
