The Best Popcorn Ever
By figmentcat, Sunday, August 15, 2010, 1 commentsWhat is it with me and food posts on here? I've stumbled upon the best, most delicious, most mouth-watering popcorn I've ever had, and I just want to shout about it from the rooftop! Okay, maybe that's a little too dramatic, but Garrett's Popcorn from Chicago is just simply divine. It's the best treat I've had on our road-trip thus far. Granted, my boyfriend and I are only about a week in to our 2-month-long cross-country extravaganza, but I have a feeling this popcorn is going to be hard to beat. I found the shop at Chicago's Navy Pier, by accident, of course, which is always the best way to find the best treats. We had already eaten dinner at "the best stuffed pizza" place in Chicago, Giordano's, but I think that going to whatever place Google pops up first as "the best pizza in _______" may not be the way we should proceed as our trip goes on.
Inside the shops and dining spots of the pier, the aroma of salty, buttery, popcorn goodness smacked me upside the head. I have a big weakness for it already. Rob and I are the kind of people who order the grande/extra large/way-too-big-for-us tub of popcorn every time we go to the movies. (And we usually enjoy that more than whatever movie we see!) So I have some experience with the kernels, and I know what I like taste-wise. The smell floating out of Garrett's was too good to resist. But would it be any good? Was it worth standing in the line that reached outside the door? What if it is — gasp — that flat kind of stale popcorn that is just nauseating?
Thankfully, my fears were quashed the moment I bit into a handful of Garrett's "CheeseCorn." It literally melted in my mouth while being just crunchy enough at the same time. The cheese flavor was divine, even though it was messy finger-wise. I also bought a "CaramelCrisp" popcorn ball. And, somehow, the caramel popcorn was better than the cheese. We only have a little of each left, sadly. I feel like driving back and buying a trunk load. This treat was a good lesson in remembering not to always trust Google and to always, always trust my taste buds.

You are SO correct. Garrett's popcorn is the best I have ever had. I moved away from Chicago several years ago, and I have yet to find it's equal.
