Tiptoe through the Tulips

Nothing tells you spring is around the corner like the sight of a blooming tulip! Put this woeful winter behind you for good with a visit to Dixon Gallery & Gardens and their 20,000 Tulips in 2010 exhibition. This incredible horticultural display is exactly what the name implies: 20,000 dazzling tulips and thousands of other bulbs blooming on the Dixon’s 17 acres of lush gardens.

The exhibit is a complex arrangement that incorporates a wide array of colors and bulb types. In addition to 35 varieties of hybrid tulips and 16 species tulips, which grow naturally in the wild, hundreds of camassia and allium bulbs will be blooming, as well. You’ll want to bring your camera; the rainbow of spring colors is the perfect backdrop for a million photo ops.

And you might learn a thing or two during your tulip tour. With extensive interpretive signage on display, 20,000 Tulips will be an educational opportunity for all visitors. Pick up some information on this extraordinary plant so you can put some bulbs in the ground next season. On March 28 at 2pm you can really get your fill of flower knowledge at the Keukenhof Flower Garden lecture by Brent Heath.

Even the kids can enjoy a stroll (or a run) through the gardens! Bring the whole family out on March 27 for the Dixon’s annual Easter Egg Hunt, where the grounds will be covered with colorful flowers and matching pastel eggs.

Catch your case of spring fever at the Dixon this year, where supreme beauty is always the ultimate goal. 20,000 Tulips in 2010 will be blooming mid-March through mid-April at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, 4339 Park Avenue. The exhibition is sponsored by Pam and McNeal McDonnell and Brent & Becky’s Bulbs. For more information visit Dixon.org or call 901.761.5250.

Hours are 10am – 4pm, Tuesday – Friday; 10am – 5pm Saturday; 1 – 5 pm Sunday.  Free admission Saturdays before noon & pay-what-you-can Tuesdays. Regular admission: $3 - $7.
