Why Today's Daily Muse ROCKS
By eveningessayist, Monday, June 21, 2010Allow me a moment for some total friend-promotion. I know a lot of people who get frustrated with their day-to-day realities, get a little bored at work, or maybe get down about how much of an impact they can make in the world. A friend of mine recently launched MAJOR Impact (today's Daily Muse), and is proving that together, we can make a real difference in people’s lives.
Watching her build the website, launch Resume Rescue Month and pool together friends and former colleagues, I’ve seen her show others again and again that although the economy is a mess, there are a few simple things regular people can do to really improve the chances of those who are unemployed.
MAJOR Impact is free and relies upon volunteers. Those looking for work are given a chance to connect with volunteers in their field to brush up their resume and interview skills. A few are donating interview clothes. My friend's efforts fight against the idea that you have to have money to make money, or that economic mobility is just for a fortunate few. Job seekers are simply being equipped with the tools so many already have.
It’s a tough job market, and any advantage is huge. Check out the website, volunteer, or refer your friends. Resume Rescue Month has been extended and Back to Work Wednesdays is in July (where people will volunteer their statuses on Facebook and Twitter to help their friends and contacts hear about new position openings).
I’ve volunteered twice now—it’s easy and really rewarding.
*Thank you Skirt! for spotlighting MAJOR Impact!
