I'm no Carrie Bradshaw, but I have learned to wear heels

Love it or hate it, when people think of NYC fashion, they think Carrie Bradshaw.  Here's the thing.  I loved Sex and the City as much as the next chick (although I never understood how you choose Big over Aidan), but having been a NYCer for about 13 years now (scary), I never understood the heels thing.  Carrie almost always wore heels.  Samantha, Miranda, Charlotte -- heels.  Mind you, since I don't make a ton of money, I never much cared what was on my feet.  Even while watching Sex and the City, I thought, "Oh, come on, only people that can afford cabs wear heels in the world's biggest walking city."

But as I started to pay attention to women's feet, I noticed something unexpected.  Women do wear heels everywhere.  Walking on the street, on buses, in subways.  So what, really, was my aversion to heels?

I'm a comfort sort of gal.  I like jeans, sneakers, flip flops, T-shirts.  I like to max and relax in whatever I wear.   And in this city made for walking, I'd like my feet to be most comfortable.  So you might be asking yourself, "Why is Drunk Little Asian yammering about heels then?"

Well, the thing is -- I've always envied those chicas that can rock the high heel life.  I always thought, "My feet can't handle it.  I just can't do it" or "I just don't have the money.  Can't afford them."    I thought to myself, "I'd look ridiculous even trying."

And well, here's the thing, I talk myself out of a lot of things in life.  There are tons of things I've love to do, wear, go.  But I'm always thinking, "I can't..."

if you want something, you gotta go out and get it.  Carrie wanted to wear heels so she trained those feet for walking.  Being a Little Asian, I've always wanted to stand up a bit taller, elevate myself a bit higher.  And I can't do that if I'm always thinking in a contraction.  If I'm always thinking in the negative.   I'm trying to make it my goal in life to not to just be comfortable with my station in life, but to go out and get the things I want.

It's hard to step out of the comfort zone.  Hard to rein in those "I can't" impulses and train them in the "I can."  It's hard to challenge yourself to go the extra mile.  But if I want to be a writer, if I want to be more ambitious, if I want to wear heels, then I have to just figure out a way to make it work.

So I went out to Payless.  I got myself a rocking pair of black high heels.   The first day or two walking in those heels hurt, and I worried that I looked like a klutz.  But after a week, I stopped thinking so hard.  I stopped thinking "I can't."  And now I'm strutting those shoes all over town.

Rock those heels!

I'm a 5'2 Hispanic woman and I always wear heels unless I'm exercising, going to get a pedicure, or hanging around the house. OK, and maybe if I'm going grocery shopping. But to work and out I'm always wearing at least a 3 inch heel. I know I don't live in NYC and I can drive everywhere I go, but still, I need to be taller, especially now that my 10 year old is 5'1. Have you tried wedges? Still high but less heel stress on the feet.

@Shoegirl1970, haven't tried wedges yet...

@Shoegirl1970, haven't tried wedges yet, but great idea!  I love how you said that you need to be taller because your child is now 5'1"!  That's how I feel about my nieces.  One's 8 years old and she'll definitely tower over me soon!
