Dropping the School Drop-Off from My Schedule
By Dawn Maria, Friday, January 7, 2011, 2 commentsLast week we purchased a used Honda Accord for my oldest son, a senior, to drive and thus ended the era of the morning school run for me. I cannot begin to express my joy. It's funny because we're so close to the school, it takes about ten minutes tops, but I feel like a heavy load has been lifted from my shoulders.
I'm entering the phase of Motherhood where slowly but surely, my responsibilities will lessen. Right now it feels euphoric because both of my sons are still at home. My older one will be away at college in September which will make my daily life easier, but perhaps a bit more lonely.
When we become parents, we all know that we're supposed to work ourselves out of a job. The only problem is, it never feels like that. Parenting has this way of wearing you down to the point it seems that no end is in sight.
Well ladies, there is an end in sight because I can see the light in the distance. It's not as if I'm dying for my boys to leave home, but I feel strongly that I have to approach the empty nest with a positive attitude. To that end, I celebrate the small milestones. Like not needing a baby sitter or a car seat. And this week- no more school run!
Now my morning is seamless, I just make their lunches and go about my business. I can stay in my velcro rollers longer, have more coffee and waste extra time online. The best part it, each boy will return home every night and I can still hold him and get a hug.
Next fall, I'll have to make a school run of two and half hours to get a hug from my Big Boy.

Great attitude! I remember
Great attitude! I remember when, just a few years ago, I was in your position. In some ways , it made our relationship better because I wasn't there badgering him to get out the door. It became his responsibility. Sounds like you have given him a good foundation (and car). Great launch into the world for BOTH of you!
I have so much respect
for Moms. I can barely get myself out the door, food on the table and the house kept to a livable level of mess and it's just me and my husband. I tell my mom everyday how much respect I have gained for her. I honestly don't know how she, or any working mom, does it. It's an absolute miracle! Yay for a little break for you!
