boy or girl?

I don't have any children but I was reading in ELLE magazine (Nov. 2009) that some women suffer from what's being termed Gender Disappointment (GD). They wanted a girl but got a boy (or vice versa). This article was more about those who wanted a girl but with each attempt ended up with boys.

I was amazed at the lengths people will go to "ensure" a girl; called "swaying techniques". Sleeping with tampons soaked in lime juice to lower the Ph of the uterus and create optimal conditions for the X chromosome sperm. (say WHAT?) Fertility clinics seem more than happy to help by implanting only the girl embryos (upwards of $15,000 a treatment) and what do they do with the boy embryos? It was like reading science fiction. I had no idea this was even possible, but honestly never thought about it before. The story went on to explain that some women suffer deep depressions over their GD. There are books available and support groups. Lots of groups, I googled it.

I don't really "get" the level of obsession present among these women but I can definitely relate to wanting a girl. All I've ever pictured was a little girl first, then a little boy. A boy and girl set of twins would be ideal although extremely exhausting. I myself have never been a particularly "girly girl". My mother wasn't either. My sister and I played with Matchbox cars, He-Man and squirt guns, wore camouflage pants, dove through piles of leaves, caught toads and grasshoppers, and rolled down our driveway on skate boards. But I would try to be girly for my daughter. The whole shebang (pun intended). Frilly dress-up dresses, tea parties, ballerina slippers, ribbons, barrettes, slumber parties, playhouses with handmade curtains, mini mani/pedis...I suppose I should find someone to father said child first. It's somewhere on the to do list. A child is a blessing in any form no matter what gender it may be. I'm more of the type of person that would just take what I've been given and make the best of it.

The ELLE story closed with a women that finally decided to adopt a little girl, then conceived one on her own...and, ironically, both girls are tomboys! Isn't life funny? If I end up in that boat I'll still be happy and prepared since I am basically a tomboy at heart. They make pink camouflage right?

boy or girl?

As someone who had an easy

As someone who had an easy first pregnancy and then had a terrible time with the second pregnancy and miscarriages and needed a D&C because the baby's heart stopped- I don't get the obsession with gender. Be glad to have a healthy kid! (that would be my commentary on the article) My mom was an NICU nurse for years and only saw VERY sick infants- and naturally, she has the same perspective. Be grateful for a child. However, after each boy was born I asked the Dr., "Whatta we got?" and when she and he said "Boy", I said thank goodness! I didn't want to deal with hair every morning! :)
