Sentencing Rapist
By compassionate heart, Thursday, October 29, 2009, 1 commentsAs some of you know, I am a counselor for survivors of sexual assault and was really discouraged this past week. Well, the case was against a 36 year old male who raped an 11 year old girl and he received 35 years in prison. He has been in jail for the last couple of years and will actually serve a total of 15 years in prison for this sexual assault, he was facing life in prison. So I feel like I have many problems with this and it really makes me angry. Really, a person can rape a child and just serve 15 years, does that make sense? I feel like this is not an appropriate sentence for someone who also had many prior run ins with the law such as DWI's and domestic assaults. I don't know if I am overreacting. I am glad that he admitted to his guilt however I feel as if he still has to pay for the crimes that he committed not only against this 11 year old child but also to the family. The other thing is that this child and her family will live with the effects of this sexual assault daily and for a very long time, most likely longer than 15 years. It just doesn't seem fair and not only does it make me angry but really sad. I feel as if this child wasn't even taken into consideration. I do have a renewed sense of purpose in the fact that there is still so much work to be done in order to help educate and create awareness in our community about our children's safety and all of our safety.

Didn't you know that the
Didn't you know that the "RAPIST" has rights? I feel once a person makes the choice to rape or murder ....they LOSE those rights. Our system is too damn easy....We are more interested in counseling the Rapist / Murder than the victim. We are more concerned with "Human Rights" than "Common Sense."
