So, Who's Buried in the Backyard?
By cherduffin, Saturday, April 18, 2009, 1 commentsThis true-life scene took place 5 years ago, when SuperKid was 6 years old....
(SUPERKID enters upstage right and crosses the living room. HE is still sleepy and, rubbing his eyes, climbs up and sits on the bar stool at the breakfast bar. MOM(me) is making breakfast and getting lunch items ready to be packed for school.)
SuperKid: Mommy, Dad said that when Boz the cat died a few years ago...he went to Heaven. Is that true?
Mom: Um...yes.
SuperKid: And Dad buried Boz in the backyard?
Mom: Right. Remember how we put a wooden rabbit holding up a cross at Boz's grave?
SuperKid: Yeah, I 'member. Then, when Ziggy the cat died, Dad said he went to Heaven too, right?
(MOM pauses, her hand holding the butter knife steadily over the hot toast.)
Mom: Uh, huh....
SuperKid: ...and Dad said he buried Ziggy right next to Boz, right?
Mom:(uncomfortable) Yes....yes, that's right. That's what Dad said...
(SUPERKID leans his elbows on the counter top and plunks his chin into his cupped hands. HE blinks and looks unwaveringly at MOM. MOM flinches under SUPERKID's steady gaze, then begins to butter the toast.)
SuperKid: So, Mom....
Mom:(hesitant) Yes?
SuperKid: If Boz is in Heaven and Ziggy is in Heaven....who's buried in the backyard?
[end]
So...where DO our beloved pets go when they die? I mean, other than the backyard to be buried? Where do they go? And what, oh, what do you tell YOUR kids about them?
