Our Oh So Supportive Politicians -- Tom Effing Delay
By DrunkLittleAsian, Monday, March 8, 2010, 2 commentsAccording to the Huffington Post, Tom Delay believes that people are unemployed because they want to be. Sure, that's easy to say when you have a full time job, can support your family, and can pass judgment on others that aren't as lucky.
I am unemployed. For awhile, I was able to garner some freelancing work from home, but as my writing assignments have died down, I'm in the search of a steady day job. It is ridiculous to me that someone in this day and age can get away with saying something like that. Nothing could be further from the truth -- at least in my experience.
Every day, I wake up with the hope my phone will ring, that there'll be an email in my inbox, that I'll do my daily, extensive job search, and that maybe, just maybe I will find a new job. Yes, I am on unemployment. You know what? I'd rather not be. I'd rather have an office to go to every day, I'd rather have a steady pay check, I'd rather have solid benefits rather than the Cobra payments we're paying barely by the skin of our teeth. And I'm not alone. I have dozens of friends and family in the same boat.
It's so easy for people with jobs to say that the unemployed wish it on themselves. But I had a job and I loved it. No job is perfect, but I loved having a place to go every day, people to talk to and work with. Every day for me now is looking for work.
I try to do the best I can. In the moments I take a break from my hours of job hunting, I write. I cook. I try to make room for the things I don't have time to do when I'm working all the time. I am trying to garner more writing work. But it's not easy, because I've always had a job. I've always had work. But in this day and age, that's just not guaranteed for anyone anymore.
I'm grateful for whatever help the government gives. I go to the job hunting lectures, I talk to people on how to improve my resume. In my opinion, unemployment benefits are helping do the best we can. Which is just to get by. I just wish that all the people that are supposed be fighting to make our economy better understood that.

I agree
Great post, Celena. I agree; it is not easy to find a job these days. I've applied for several positions in the past year, some full-time, mostly freelance, all with little luck. It's tough out there. It sounds like you're doing all the right things though, so I hope you find what you're looking for soon.
Just curious, what sites do you like for job hunting? Thanks in advance!
Hey Jen!
Thanks for the comment! I hope I find something soon too. These are the sites I look at:
Idealist.org
Mandy.com (entertainment jobs)
Entertainmentcareers.net
Indeed, Simply Hired -- Google like job search engines. I basically type in "Television" or something like that and look at every page.
Playbill.com (theatre jobs)
Nyfa.org (arts jobs)
Mediabistro.org
Craigslist.org
I think there are a couple more, but can't think of them now. BTW, look at Mediabistro. There are a lot of magazines on there that you might think about pitching to. Like the Urbanite -- it's a Bmore magazine. Good luck!
