What does your puzzle look like?

His name was Jacob. His face was full of freckles and his long dark hair was always slicked back. He was soft-spoken, sensitive and the butt of most kids jokes. Jacob was overweight and struggled in school. He always wore black clothes as if to blend into the background. He and I went to elementary school together and I can remember wanting to be his friend. I raised my hand in class and asked to sit with him since our seats were being changed. Even after all of these years I will never forget his smile. I learned more about Jacob, his family and how he always put on a brave face when the kids teased him about his weight. I knew secretly it stung.

Why on this rainy Wednesday did Jacob pop into my mind? I thought about what drives people to be who they are and how they grow into themselves as time goes on. Isn’t there an underlying “theme” or “themes” in all of us, so deeply rooted that if we thought long and hard about it, the pieces of our puzzles would come together.

So what’s your story? Think about it. As you watch the rainfall today, take time to look back on your life. Remember that time when someone told you NO. You can’t. It’s impossible. I wouldn’t advise it. Did you believe that person? Or did you learn to listen to your own voice?

As Jacob and I got older and formed new cliques, we lost touch. I hope wherever he is that he’s happy and takes care of himself. Maybe Jacob turned out to be a teacher or a counselor or a fitness coach.

I hope Jacob chose to take his struggles and turn them into successes.

I hope the same for everyone.
