Texas Y'All

They weren’t kidding when they said it would be hot outside. The temperature got down to a frosty 93 degrees around ten o’clock at night at the Texas Ranger game. We spent six of the seven days in sunshine. We ran before it got “too hot” and swam in the afternoon. After this miserable New England weather, it was refreshing and much appreciated!

We stayed with Randy’s best friend Trey and his wife Brooke (I know, how funny?) oh and Randy’s radio name is Trey…cute, huh?

Texas is a magical place. Not like Disneyworld…a different magic filled with cheesy Mexican food, miles of farmland, cute boutique shops, BBQ, Dallas Cowboys, the State flag, Blue Bell Ice-cream, cold beer, smiles and lots of southern charm. Hey y’all never got old and seeing the crowd of people waiting to get into “Babe’s” made me laugh. I can’t think of too many places where people wait 2-3 hours for dinner. Their menu is fried chicken and chicken fried steak along with corn, biscuits and mashed potatoes! People were sippin’ beer, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. The sunsets are gorgeous, but the big snake in the middle of the street, not so much.

We got a chance to tour the new Cowboys stadium and watching Randy and his best friend was like watching me at and my sister at a candy store. We took a break from the heat and saw “The Hangover,” which I highly recommend. We caught up with Randy’s mom and family and I discovered that I could in fact be a donkey whisperer after patting a few. We played a few rounds of pool at a local bar, revisited Grapevine Lake, where we got engaged and Randy did a live shift on 106.1 KISS-FM in Dallas, something he has always dreamed of doing. The fireworks were a little too loud for Carter, Randy’s best friend’s son. He’s two and in a few weeks will be a new big brother as they welcome a baby girl to their family! It was fun playing games with him and trying to translate what he was saying. My favorite thing he did was pat the floor and tell me to "sitdownwifme" or something like that.

What I love most about Texas, aside from the fact that is where my fiancé is from and is so family-oriented, is the friendly people and laid back pace. Texas is after all, “The Friendly State.”

Maybe it’s because we are on vacation when we visit and aren’t thinking of bills, errands, work, etc. but I notice a change in my energy. My shoulders drop a little and I’ll happily wander the local arboretum even though it is 100 degrees…as long as I can have an oversized Blue-Bell ice-cream, I’m good to go. Time stands still and it’s just easy.

Sure they are some things that I don’t agree with or like in Texas like hunting or hanging a deer’s head on a wall or all of the meat eating, but I can look past these things and see all of the good. I order veggie fajitas and choose to focus on all that Texas means to me.

With any place it all comes down to perspective and what you decide to focus on. No matter where you live or vacation, soak up the energy and be greatful for the experience.

If you could pick any spot in the US to call “home away from home,” what state would you pick?

Texas Y'All

Texas, my first love

I was born in Lubbock and grew up mostly in the Austin area. For 18 years of my life I call Texas home. I have been out of the state for just about 12 years. I still call it home. Part of that has to do with me moving so much, but mostly it is the way of life that I miss. People actually stop to enjoy the little things. Although I spent most of my life in medium to big cities, they all had a different feel from where I live now. I have lived in the Augusta, GA area for about 7 years and I love my friends and the area I live in, but is it home? I can't quite say yes. I miss the cowboys and dad's actually spending time with their kids and enjoying it. Families and friends getting together at the lake or the ballpark. Yes I still watch the Rangers and the Cowboys, even when they suck! Mostly though I miss the subtle pleasantries, the nice to see you, how's your family that is not just a I don't really care, but I'm being polite. Although I am not missing the 100+ degree weather!

Texas Y'All

Home is Home!

I still call Mass home even though we don't live there! I hear great things about Austin. I absolutely love Texas for all of the things you mentioned..you will always be a Texas girl no matter where you live :) I never would have ventured out there if it weren't for my fiance growing up there. I will never forget going there for the first time. I met his friends, family and football buddies and was blown away at how friendly and down to earth everyone was. I fell in love with the people and the energy. Our upcoming wedding will be fun between the "howahya's" and "hey y'all's!"
