One of my favorite Fall Looks
By bmaynor, Sunday, November 8, 2009Today I thought I thought I would post something a little different, one of my favorite fall looks.

This look is from Ralph Lauren's Fall 2009 RTW collection and it highlights how to layer with texture for a terrific fall outfit.
Layering is a tool that is very helpful when transitioning seasons and especially here in the South. Our winters are mild and frequently start out and end coolly only to warm up during the day. Layering is a great way to dress appropriately, but is often difficult to do well. I have practiced for years and still feel I am learning how to layer clothes effectively.
The key is fit. If you are going to layer you need to only select items that are cut close to your body and are thinner. That is the only way to avoid adding bulk with the layer. Another advantage to layering is that you can create depth by incorporating different textures with each layer. In this outfit, the pants have a slight sheen to dress up the look, the lovely wool sweater and blazer to warm it up and the playful scarf to add some drama. With the shoes matching the pant color you are visually extending the line of the leg automatically making it look longer and yourself taller.
Every item works harmoniously in this outfit, adding depth and texture, not competition. The best way to achieve this cohesion is to shop in outfits. If you tried to pull this look together from five different shopping trips, it would be much more difficult, than if you purchased it all at the same time.
Also I feel this look is perfect for any number of activities, both professional and casual and can easily be tailored to fit your particular sense of style. Changing the color palette, the sweater pattern and accessories will give you a completely different look with the same basic components.
Give it a try and share your success with me. I would love to see what outfits you are wearing this season and answer your styling questions. Send them to brian@brianmaynor.com.
