Did I Miss Winter?
By trishlawrence, Friday, February 26, 2010I think I might have missed it. Apologies to those in practically every other state in America, but Seattle has had a very mild 2010. We've never dipped below 30 and the rain has been minimal and I think I blinked or something because now we're to March and there are plants and dogwood trees blooming everywhere. I know, New York, doesn't seem quite fair, does it?
I admit I'm kind of excited at the prospect of missing two months of winter. It doesn't bother me at all. And I don't mind rain either having been born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. We PNW folks get really excited by spring too. Something about blooming makes us really happy. We break out the bikes and start oiling them up. We dust our windowsills and count down the days until they'll be wide open, we get so excited when the first of the spring/summer fruits begin to roll into produce departments. And yes, our husbands do wear socks under their sandals.
Each March we make a pilgrimage to Mt. Rainier, a looming peak that holds some of the PNW's most beautiful glaciers. The higher up we go, the cooler it gets, so we're in ski clothes, but as we pass the trees with their new growth and the thunderous rivers that are full to the brim, we look at each other and smile.
Spring. Hang on New York and New England. Hang on everyone. Spring is on the way soon.
