Rant on Taxes, Change, and what these things really mean to me: I'm fired up: be warned.
By BethyBoop, Wednesday, October 22, 2008, 5 commentsI wrote this blog on facebook because I saw an ad that made me furious on tv. I wanted to share it here too:
Original blog:
I just have to say that although Obama is not planning on raising taxes
for people who make under $250,000 a year (do YOU make that much???),
EVEN IF HE WAS going to raise them for everyone- you all do realize
that those taxes are not for his personal shopping trips, right? That
money goes back into the country and YOU get it back, whether it be in
roads, better healthcare, better protection...I can say completely
honestly that I would be willing to pay higher taxes (and I am dirt
poor) because taxes are necessary to get the country's debt under
control. The key here is electing someone who will reform the way the
government works. Yes, this may mean money. Money is usually involved
in paying back debt.
John McCain has a commercial running about Obama raising taxes
(nevermind that it says nothing about people making more or less than
$250,000 a year...) where a man says, "So Barack Obama wants my sweat
to pay for his trillion dollars in new spending?" THIS MONEY IS NOT FOR
HIS PERSONAL USE. IT IS USED TO PAY FOR NECESSARY IMPROVEMENT AND
UPKEEP OF THE COUNTRY. Personally, I realize that we all need to help
out if we all want to keep the beautiful country that we have been so
lucky to have in the past. We all must pitch in. Do not complain about
the problems this country faces if you are unwilling to help fix them.
The government does not just create more money when it needs money for
improvements and upkeep and new organizations- it does not drop from
the sky. We ALL are responsible for contributing. I can say completely
and surely, I am a Real American and I recognize that taxes are a
necessary part of the economy. We will ALL be helped in some way at
some point using the taxes we all pay. Not only are they for the improvement our
our nation, but they're to help get us out of debt that the last 8
years has gotten us into. If people don't want to pay taxes then they
shouldn't be allowed to drive on roads, receive medicare, or send their
kids to public schools. Doing things, anything mostly, requires money.
I agree that it should be spent wisely, but money does in fact need to
be spent to improve and maintain what we've all worked so hard to
accomplish in America. As a real American (not only because I'm from a
small town, but also because I was born in America) I'm willing to pay
taxes to help this nation succeed. Now THAT is American. Not only that, but if you don't want to pay taxes then maybe the US military
shouldn't protect you (if we are talking who is a real American and who’s not). Your tax money goes towards funding the
military. I'd MUCH rather fund that then fund the Palin kid's plane
trips to places they weren't invited.

I just felt that these things seem to be simple principles to me and I don’t understand how the RNC gets away with putting these ideas in people’s heads that simply make no sense. If I can do anything, I just want to give people a different opinion without trying to scare them. I think it is so important to defend one’s own candidate as opposed to putting down the opposite. THIS is why the tax plans hold up. THIS is the change I want. For those who say that we cannot articulate the change we want...I want: education that stands up against the levels of other countries, help for the middle class, reform of programs that are outdated, NO AMENDMENT ON GAY MARRIAGE, unity, better and more affordable healthcare that includes preventative care, stopping the handouts for big oil, money invested in alternative energy that doesn’t involve fossil fuels.....is this enough for those that say I can’t tell you what change means? It means this- I. Want. A. President. Who. Cares. About. Me.
That’s all.

Awesome blog! Did I infer
Way to go, Beth! Let me
Just a thought...
Melissa, I applaud your
Melissa, I applaud your ability to step outside your original comfort zone and look inside to see what you really believe. I think that so many people in this country grow up with parents who are affiliated with one party or the other and so they don't question at all which party they most identify with.
Sarah- I have no understanding of the issue regarding the military because, thankfully, I have no one in my family or close friends who has chosen the military. I feel your pain though. If we are to entrust our money to go to the place that needs it most, and we see that our military is not properly protected, then I want to know a) what my money is used for, and b) if there is not enough to procure proper equipment, then why are we not paying more and making this happen?
Getaclewis- I completely understand your frustration with the way the country is run. I just happen to see it as an opportunity for change. Unfortunately, in the system we have today, members of other parties do not have much of a fighting chance. I think, though, that the best chance this country has of voicing opinions not typically heard is to elect someone new and different from the last eight years. The sooner people stop needing to be in the scared safety of the GOP, the sooner other people have the chance to make their views known. It would be wonderful if other parties could get their foot in the door. I do also believe that hard work should be rewarded. In terms of understanding that, I definitely think that Barack Obama is more likely to protect you and your hard work than John McCain. Taxes aside, the major party that most consistently stands up for the middle class is the democrats- so I believe they are our best option. I think that taxes do more than we think- they go towards roads, schools...everyday things we take for granted. I don't trust the government to do anything right either, necessarily- but what other option do we have? Isn't it best to keep trying until we find the government that will help? We must keep electing a president every four years; and as such, I would prefer it to be a democrat because their views most consistently speak to mine. Particularly Barack Obama- I think he thinks differently than anyone we have tried in recent years and I think he deserves (and we deserve) the chance to see if we can get some real work on our side in Washington. I think that if anyone is willing to help out our education standards, make healthcare more affordable (this particularly affects me because of my fibromyalgia), and cut programs which are outdated- it is Barack Obama. I think this country deserves the chance to have someone different try his (or her) hand at the country. For me, that person right now is Barack Obama.
So selfish
