Taking a Line From An Old 60s Song
By AmyD75, Friday, July 29, 2011, 2 comments"Come on people now, smile on your brother. Everybody get together try to love one another right now." - The Youngbloods.
So this song was written well before I was ever thought about, but I did grow up to the music and while I don't always agree with the politics and mentality of the "hippie movement" of the 60s, I find this song to be fitting for this time and age.
My husband and I are enjoying ourselves at the beach, taking a much needed vacation and what will be our last vacation as a twosome, as our son is only eight weeks away and next summer we will be a threesome. My husband is training for a sprint triathalon, so he has been up every morning this week, just as the sun has begun to peek its bright eyes over the horizon, while I have sat inside with my coffee, the Bible, and the news. Of course, the talk and concerns these days is the debt crisis and how the U.S. will overcome. We're constantly forced to deal with "embattled" senators and congressmen and women who are refusing to cave to the ideals of their counterparts. With each passing day, Americans are inundated with dramatic and sensationalized news stories about the horrors we will encounter if we default. For me, it has become quite frustrating to listen to how stubborn these senators are, not to mention our President. Lately, I just tune it out as listening to it makes my blood pressure rise and I have no desire to jeopardize the health of my child thanks to the selfish wants of our leaders.
This morning, my husband took to his same routine while I sat inside and wrote. He was gone a bit longer than usual, but I wasn't too terribly concerned. When he finally came back in, I asked how his run went. He told me great and then went into telling me that he was later coming in because there was a man out on the beach attempting to put a tent up all alone. My husband, being the non-selfish and helpful human he is, offered to help the man. He told me that he talked to the man as he helped him and the man said he couldn't understand our leaders in Washington and what a bad example they are setting for so many of us. He explained to my husband that he sees people, like my husband, helping out others all the time and why wasn't it possible for these senators to compromise and clean up the mess they've made for our children. I had to smile, because this man was right. I see it all the time, strangers helping strangers, some giving up their own comforts for another and I can't help but wonder myself why Washington can't take a que from its citizens and do the same.
I'm trying to become the optimist, an example for my future child, but I have to tell you it's really hard when I see what's going on in Washington. Maybe someone should walk into their closed doors, blaring The Youngbloods.

I would love to see them play
I would love to see them play that song. People do help each other out and I'm struggling to understand when the word COMPROMISE became such a dirty word. I hope, too for your child's sake and future generations that "Everybody gets together!" Enjoy your vacation and the special time of the birth of your first child.

Great Post, I actually
Great Post,
I actually remember that song as a child....:-) I, too, believe that our leaders on Capitol Hill should stop the constant bickering and blame games. They continue to wait until the last moment to pass a bill causing anxiety amongst the people who pay their wages.
Congratulations on the upcoming new addtion to your family!
Best wishes,
Babs
