Grocery Cart Obesity Buster
By AmyD75, Wednesday, September 7, 2011It’s amazing the little things that come to mind while sitting in a parking lot and watching people. South Carolina is considered to be one of the most obese states within this country. Part of that blame can be placed upon the typical Southern culture, aka meat and potatoes and fried food, but the other blame has to be placed upon our complacency and the fact that we are unwilling to actually work out and make ourselves healthy.
This past weekend, as my husband stopped into our local Wal-Mart super center to pick up some groceries, I watched as an employee came out with the cart collector and began collecting grocery carts. In each parking lot there are collections points for the carts, but I’m noticing more and more everyday the sheer laziness of not just Southerners, but humans in general. Grocery carts are no longer being placed in their collection receptacles, but instead are just being left in the parking lot. There’s no reason for this and when I see it happen, it infuriates me.
So, I propose that one way to help combat obesity is to actually get off your lazy butts and walk your grocery cart over to the appropriate location instead of meaninglessly leaving it in the parking lot. How long can this possible take? I’ve calculated it, and the amount of time even for the slowest of walkers is so minute in the grand scheme of things that it’s insane to NOT do this. What’s the advantage? Well, one advantage is that it’s the right thing to do. Lone grocery carts left haphazardly in a parking lot are a danger to not only the cars that are parked, but also the people that are walking. The second advantage is that walking is a form of cardio exercise, something that his population desperately needs. While you may not be walking miles or doing any sort of power walking and elevating your heart rate, you are still burning calories, and one small step could lead to an even bigger one.
If any of you out there are violators of the placing grocery carts in the correct receptacles, then shame on you! If you need more reasons to actually put your butt in gear and deposit them in the correct place, then let me know. I’m a wealth of reasons on this topic. For those of you already participating in the grocery cart obesity buster program…ROCK ON!
Thank you for time!
