My Intuition Blog Experiment: If You're a Writer-Mom, Own It
By Amanda Jean Clothier, Sunday, December 12, 2010It's Week 46, Day 1 of my blog experiment and things are winding down fast. I'm suddenly finding it harder to post my blogs, mostly because I have a lot of work coming in, a lot of other writing to attend to, which is a good thing. As a shout-out to all of you writer-moms out there who are trying to write from home and keep it professional, know that you are not alone. It's a tricky business and the best advice I can share, today, is to own it and let the people you writer about know you work from home, often with kids underfoot. It doesn't mean you aren't professional or putting in the time, it's just a different world. Lately, when I'm doing a phone interview for a story, I've been telling the people I talk to that I have small children and that they are in the next room, so there might be an interruption. So far, everyone I've talked to has been gracious and understanding. This is a relief. And, it's not a given. But, I figure, the more of us who own what we do and how we do it, the more used to it people on the other end of the phone will be.
There are lots of examples, whether it's an old episode of Desperate Housewives, or the movie, One Fine Day, where parents are struggling to hide the fact that they are indeed parents with children. It makes for good comedy but not in real life. So, for what it's worth, own being a writer-mom, where your worlds are constantly colliding. You'll be a lot happier.
I felt like I needed to say that today so there it is!
